Neurosis

Neurosis is a term that is generally used to describe nonpsychotic mental illness in which contact with reality and some degree of insight Opens in new window is usually retained by the patient.

The groups of disorders with neurosis are classified as neurotic disorders. These include anxiety disorders (panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, phobias), depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, somatoform, and dissociative disorders.

Neurotic disorders characteristically trigger feelings of distress and anxiety and impairs functioning. The main disturbances occur in a person’s emotional, occupational, and social life.
